Abstract

<PICT:0642902/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0642902/IV (a)/2> A detachable film is formed upon a moving surface such as a roller by passing the surface in close proximity to an outlet from a passage in a tank of coating material, a portion of the wall of which passage is continuously moved in the direction of the outlet to feed the material along the passage by its frictional contact with the material. The moving part of the wall of the passage may comprise one or more rollers or endless belts. The passage may comprise blocks 14 and 15, Fig. 3, making liquid-tight contact with rollers 6 and 7 whose axes are parallel and below the surface of the liquid, and which are oppositely rotated to force the liquid along the passage. The rollers 6 and 7 and the blocks 14 and 15 are adjustable towards and away from each other. The block 15 is provided with a removable bar 29 constituting a dam or weir held in place by a plate 30, and the block 14 has a plate 25 undercut at one edge to provide a lip 28. The plate 25 is adjustable towards the dam 29 to vary the orifice and the speed of rolls 6 and 7 is variable. The apparatus may be inverted for coating material of high viscosity or placed so that the passage 19 extends laterally. The tank may be provided with heater units 4, and the roller 37 may be retractable from the coating position by quick-action gear. In a modification, Fig. 6, a single roll 106 forms part of a passage 119 and is in liquid-tight engagement with a member 115 having an integrally-formed dam 129.
