Abstract

1,158,930. Coating apparatus. D. MARTIN. 7 Dec., 1966 [7 Dec., 1965; 18 Feb., 1966], No. 54780/66. Heading D1L. A machine for coating the surface of sheet material consists of an upper roller 4 and a lower roller 6 between which the material to be coated is fed via supporting plates 41 and rollers 42. The rollers are relatively movable in a vertical plane and are urged one towards the other by one or more counterweights. Preferably the roller 6 is mounted in bearings at the upper ends of guide bars 8 which can move vertically in guide rollers 9 and are acted upon by a counterweight 18 through chain 17 so that the lower roller 6 is pressed against the upper roller 4 with predetermined pressure. The rolls 4, 6 are driven in opposite directions at substantially the same peripheral speed through suitable chain and sprocket drive means from motor 23. A doctor 26 of L-shaped cross-section is supported on pivotted arms 27 and can be adjusted into a position adjacent the peripheral suface of roller 4 so as to form a V-shaped trough to receive coating liquid, the adjustment of the doctor determining the thickness of coating material transferred by the roller 4 to the sheet material. The ends of the trough formed between the doctor 26 and roller 4 are provided with stopper blocks shaped to conform to the contour of the sides of the V- shaped trough and laid in the trough. Such blocks may be adjustable lengthwise of the trough to define the width of the liquid applied to the sheet material and extra blocks may be laid in the trough to divide it into separate sections only some of which contain the coating liquid so as to produce striped coating on the sheet material.
