Abstract

1,249,785. Grinding. TIMESAVERS SANDERS Inc. 9 March, 1970 [25 Sept., 1969], No. 11190/70. Heading B3D. A method of sanding a flat wooden surface of a workpiece B of which the grain runs lengthwise comprises training an endless abrasive belt 9 over a plurality of rolls 10, 11, one of which is a contact drum, feeding the workpiece along a straight path so as to be engaged by a narrow work performing zone of the belt, and constraining the path of the workpiece so that the narrow zone makes an angle of approximately seventyfive degrees with the longitudinal grain of the workpiece. The machine for carrying out the method may have a single abrasive belt or, as described, upper and lower belts 9 trained around rolls 10, 11 in upper and lower units 6, 7, the upper unit being adjustable by hydraulic rams to determine the distance apart of the contact surfaces of the rolls 11, and each unit having feed rollers 13, 13<SP>1</SP>. The workpieces are fed to the units by a conveyor having a belt 15 trained around rollers 16, 17. A guide fence 20 is fixed to the frame of the conveyer for aligning the workpieces while they are held by a gate 21 which can be raised by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders to permit the aligned workpieces to pass to the abrasive belts. In an alternative embodiment, the workpieces are fed parallel to their length, the abrasive belts being arranged at an inclination so that the contact zones are at 75 degrees to the path of travel of the workpieces.
