Abstract

642,819. Rotary brushes. COLLARO, C. June 4, 1948, No. 15201. [Class 19] A rotary brush is formed of strips of rubber or like flexible material clamped between the flanges of three or more anglesection strips of rigid material, the rigid strips being secured together to constitute a rotatably mounted supporting member for the brush. The rigid strips may be made of plastic material but are preferably made of metal. The flexible strips may be arranged parallel to the axis of the brush or helically around it. In Figs. 1 and 3 four curved rigid strips 10 of rightangle cross-section are arranged so that when placed together the flanges are helically disposed about the rotational axis and receive the two flexible strips 11. The rigid strips are secured by rivets, or other fastening members 12, which pass through holes in adjacent flanges. The longitudinal edges 13 of the rigid strips 10 are flared away from the flexible strips and adjacent portions of these flanges may be bent or grooved slightly at 14 to grip the flexible strips more firmly. The ends of the rigid strips 10 extend slightly beyond the flexible strips 11 and they are cut away as 'shown at 15 so as to provide a recess bounded by shoulders 16 to receive the end of a driving spindle which is provided with one or more projections. The extreme ends of the flanges of the rigid strips may be bent towards the corresponding ends of adjacent strips. Fig. 4 shows an alternative arrangement of the flexible strips in which four separate flexible strips 30 are clamped between the parallel flanges of adjacent strips 10. If desired, any number of flexible strips may be used and the angular section of the rigid strips should be modified accordingly. The rigid strips may have longitudinal and/or transverse ridges or grooves to retain the flexible strips more securely.
