Abstract
An electrical insulating coating composition is made by heating an aliphatic a ,o -dibasic acid with a polyhydric alcohol containing not more than four hydroxyl groups to effect partial condensation, heating the partial condensate with hexamethylenetetramine or with ammonia and formaldehyde to effect further condensation and dissolving the product in an organic solvent. The partial condensation may be effected between 180 DEG and 200 DEG C. and the further condensation between 220 DEG and 240 DEG C. Reactants specified are: adipic and sebacic acids; glycerol, glycols and pentaerythritol; solvents: mixtures of butanol and tetrahydrofuran, preferably in proportion by weight of 1 : 6, and butanol, ethanol and xylene, preferably in proportion by weight of 3 : 2 : 5. Preferably the proportion by weight of hexamethylenetetramine is between 5 and 55 per cent, the dibasic acid is between 15 and 65 per cent and the polyhydric alcohol is between 5 and 45 per cent, the most suitable proportions of the specific reactants being indicated in triangular diagrams (not shown). According to the Provisional Specification any polyhydric alcohol may be used to form the partial polyester.
