Abstract

An electrically-insulating coating composition comprises a mixture of an etherified urea-formaldehyde resin or an etherified melamine-formaldehyde resin and a partial polymeric ester of a polyhydric alcohol and a saturated aliphatic a o -dibasic acid, having an acid value between 70 and 110, dissolved in one or more organic solvents, the ratio in parts by weight of the solid urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin to the solid polymeric ester being between 0.4 : 1 and 4 : 1. Solvents specified are mixtures of primary alcohols such as butanol and ethanol and aromatic hydrocarbons such as xylene and toluene; cyclohexanol, naphtha and cresylic acid. The partial polymeric esters may be made from adipic, sebacic or succinic acid and glycols, glycerol or pentaerythritol. The compositions may be coloured by addition of dyestuffs. In examples, the compositions are made by mixing in a centrifugal mixer: (1) butylated urea-formaldehyde resin in butanol and/or xylene, partial poly-ester of glycerol and sebacic acid in methylated spirits, xylene, butanol and methylated spirits; (2) butylated melamine-formaldehyde resin, partial polyester of glycerol and adipic acid, and the same solvents as in (1); (3) butylated urea-formaldehyde resin, partial polyester of glycerol and adipic acid and the same solvents as in (1); (4) butylated urea-formaldehyde resin in butanol and/or xylene, partial polyester of glycerol and sebacic acid in cyclohexanol, naphtha, butanol and methylated spirits; (5) butylated urea-formaldehyde resin, partial polyester of pentaerythritol and sebacic acid, and the same solvents as in (1); (6) butylated urea-formaldehyde resin, partial poly-ester of glycerol and succinic acid, and the same solvents as in (1); (7) glycerol and sebacic acid are heated to 177 DEG C. until the acid value is 100, and the mass is allowed to cool to 121 DEG C. before mixing with butylated urea-formaldehyde resin in butanol and/or xylene and finally with naphtha and cresylic acid. The compositions may be used for coating wire, and cotton, silk and glass insulating sleeves, and for coating cloth to render it electrically insulating.
