Abstract

Polyesteramides are made by reacting at 140-210 DEG C. to a ball and ring softening temperature of 45-90 DEG C. (1) 3.0-4.5 mols. of maleic acid, fumaric acid, maleic anhydride, citraconic acid, citraconic anhydride or mixtures; (2) 0.5-2.0 mols. of a saturated dicarboxylic acid having 2-8 carbon atoms in a straight chain between and attached to the carboxyl groups and having no reactive groups other than the carboxyl groups, e.g. succinic, glutaric, pimelic, adipic, suberic, azeleic, sebacic or diglycollic acid or mixtures; (3) 1.5-4.7 mols. of monoethanolamine, monoisopropanolamine or mixtures; (4) 0-0.6 mols. of ethylene diamine, 1,3-propylene diamine, urea or mixtures where the sum of the mols. of the aminoalcohol and twice the mols. of the diamino compound is 2.2-4.7, and (5) 1-2.4 mols. of glycerol, pentaerythritol or mixtures of the same with aliphatic glycols having 2 to 8 carbon atoms in a straight chain, not over 50 per cent of the hydroxyl groups of the mixed polyhydric alcohols being supplied by the glycol. From 0.05-0.5 mols. of an aliphatic unsaturated monocarboxylic acid having 16-18 carbon atoms terminating in the carboxyl group, e.g. tung oil fatty acids, linseed oil fatty acids, ricinoleic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid or linolenic acid may be included in the reaction mixture. The polyesteramides are soluble in cresol, phenol or mixtures and solvents comprising 40-50 per cent cresol or phenol and the balance ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, monochlorobenzene, xylol, petroleum hydrocarbons or mixtures to form a varnish suitable for impregnating or coating stators, field coils, cotton, asbestos, paper, metal, carbon bodies, ceramic p material, glass or plastic. The varnish may also be used to coat electrical conductors, (see Group XXXVI), in which case it preferably contains 1-10 per cent cellulose acetate and may contain fillers, e.g. mica, silica or iron oxide. The subject-matter of Specification 635,445 is disclaimed.
