642,732. Purifying liquids. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. May 23, 1947, No. 13891. Convention date, July 12, 1946. Addition to 598,956. [Class 46] A package for use in ion-exchange processes comprises a disposable container 2 having a top cover 3 with a hole 5 closed by a stopper 18 through which a conduit 17 passes, a top dish-shaped spacer 7 with holes 8 backed by a screen 9, and similar parts at the bottom, and a plurality of alternate and tightly packed layers 13 to 16 of cation- and anion-exchange materials packed between the top and bottom screens without the interposition of intervening foraminous members, liquid preferably passing upwardly. The layers preferably number at least four. The wall of the container may be of impregnated laminated paper or moulded plastic sheets with or without filler or reinforcing material, or of sheet metal. If corrodible metal is used the inside is coated with a water-, acid- and alkali-proof composition. The liquid to be demineralized should pass first through a layer of cation - exchange material 16, and to ensure the package being used in the right position the holes 6, 8 are made of , different diameters. The cation-exchange material should be in the hydrogen-activated form. The uppermost layer of anion-exchange material 13 may be specially activated particularly if the liquid contains silica. If a neutral product is desired, this layer may be adjusted or buffered so that the pH of the effluent will be between 6 and 8 by treating with sufficient carbon dioxide in the presence of water or by treating with a dilute solution of sodium bicarbonate mixed with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate.
