Abstract
Fatty acids are esterified with low molecular univalent alcohols containing up to 6 carbon atoms using a mononuclear or polynuclear aromatic sulphonic acid readily soluble in water and in the fatty acid and alcohol used as a catalyst, the reaction being carried out at temperatures above the boiling point of the alcohol but below the boiling point of the ester to be manufactured. The catalyst may have one or more sulphonic groups and may be substituted by halogen or by alkyl, aryl, amino, hydroxy or carboxy groups. Specified catalysts are b -camphorsulphonic acid, benzene sulphonic acid, diphenyldisulphonic-4 : 41-acid, a - and b -naphthalene sulphonic acid, b -naphthalenedisulphonic acid, a -chloronaphthalenesulphonic acid, naphthol - 1 - sulphonic - 4 - acid, sulphosalicylic acid and a -naphthol-e -disulphonic acid. The reaction may be carried out with a very small proportion of catalyst, e.g. 0.1-5 per cent and a counter-current process may be used if desired. In examples, rape seed oil fatty acids, or peanut oil fatty acids are esterified with ethyl alcohol using as a catalyst one of b -camphor sulphonic acid, a - or b -naphthalene sulphonic acid, benzene sulphonic acid, sulphosalicylic acid, naphthalene disulphonic acid, a -chloronaphthalenesulphonic acid, naphthol - 1 - sulphonic - 4 acid or a - naphthol-e -sulphonic acid. In place of ethyl alcohol methyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, butyl or isobutyl alcohol may be used. Specification 545,415 is referred to.
