Abstract
Soaps are mixed with alkylolamine salts of acids other than soap forming acids and their sulphonation products, to stabilize the soap and to improve the lathering properties. Preferably the salts of mono-, di- or tri-alkylolamines with acids containing homo- or hetero cyclic groups are employed. The acids may contain substituted or unsubstituted mono- or poly cyclic groups, and the hydrogen atoms of the side chain or nucleus may be replaced by nitro, amino, acidic, halogen, alkyl or hydroxyl groups; the latter may be further substituted with acyl aryl or alkyl groups. Acids having a carboxylic or sulphonated carboxylic group connected through an unsaturated side chain with the nucleus may also be used. Specified acids include: Benzoic, toluic, chlor or nitrobenzoic, anthranilic, salicylic acid or derivative thereof, gallic, tannic, phenyl acetic, hydrocinnamic, phthalic, mellitic, pyromucic, indoxylic, or thiophene sulphonic acids. The alkylolamine salts may be added to the soap or formed in situ. In examples, commercial tri-ethanolamine is warmed with naphthalene sulphonic, benzoic phthalic or salicylic acid or potassium hydrogen phthalate to form a semi-solid or syrupy mass which is then preferably dissolved in a small amount of water containing glycerine and incorporated in soap. The salt may be mixed with sodium hydroxide or potassium carbonate and boric acid, and added after crutching or boiling the soap, or incorporated with soap flakes during the milling process.ALSO:Alkylolamines are warmed with acids containing homo- or hetero cyclic groups to form salts thereof. Mono-, di- or tri-alkylolamines such as commercial triethanolamine may be treated. The acids may contain substituted or unsubstituted mono- or polycyclic groups, and the hydrogen atoms of the side chains or nucleus may be replaced by nitro, amino, acidic, halogen, alkyl or hydroxy groups; the latter may be further substituted by alkyl, aryl or acyl groups. Acids having a carboxylic or sulphonated carboxylic group connected through an unsaturated side chain with the nucleus may also be used. Suitable acids are benzoic, toluic, chlor - or nitro - benzoic, anthranilic, salicylic, acetyl salicylic, gallic, tannic, phenyl acetic, hydrocinnamic, phthalic, mellitic, pyromucic, indoxylic or thiophene sulphonic acids. For example, commercial triethanolamine is warmed to about 80 DEG C. with naphthalene sulphonic, benzoic or salicylic acid or potassium hydrogen phthalate to form salts which are syrupy liquids or semi-solid products.
