[Class 12 (i)] To take up radial slackness and to pre-load a roller bearing the outer race ring is of conical formation engaged by a bush having a bore of complementary taper and supported in a cylindrical bore of a stationary housing, means being provided to effect relative axial movement between the ring and bush. As shown, the rotating spindle 11 of a machine tool is supported in the stationary portion 20 of a headstock by a bearing comprising an inner race ring 12 fast on the spindle 11, double-row caged rollers 14a, and an outer race ring 13 whose conical periphery 16 coacts with a complementary bore 17 of a bush 18 secured in the headstock. In assembly, a ring of screws 30 in a clamp-plate 29 are tightened thereby forcing the outer race ring 13 to the left, relative to the bush, thereby progressively radially compressing the bearing. To dis-assemble, the screws 30 are slackened and bolts 27 are tightened, which causes a back-plate 26 to force the outer race ring 13 to the right. A split adjusting ring 32 of selected thickness predetermines the amount of preloading. The rollers 14a are located in grooves in either race-way, the complementary race-way being plain. In a simpler construction, a single-row roller bearing is described in which the dismantling means are omitted, the outer race being axially stationary and the bush axially movable.
