Abstract
642,349. Magnetic sound recording. COLE, Ltd., E. K., and BURNARD, C. L. March 11, 1948, No. 7416. [Class 40 (ii)] In a magnetic wire or tape recorder head a magnetic core forms a closed magnetic circuit with two air gaps which divide the core into two sections each carrying a winding, one gap being the recording or reproducing gap and the other, which is wider, being the erasing gap. In Fig. 1 a magnetic recording wire C passes from a spool B over a pulley D on to a spool. A during recording, reproducing and erasing, and a single magnetic head E having a pair of windings (not shown) performs all three functions. This head, pivoted at J on an arm F pivoted at G, has two gaps G1, G2, Fig. 6, and may be positioned by a cam or lever arrangement (not shown), so that (a) gap G1 engages the wire as in Fig. 1 for recording or reproducing; (b) gap G2 engages the wire on the opposite side of the pulley for erasing ; (c) the head is entirely disengaged from the wire for rewinding. Lubricated felt pads H bear against the wire. Axial movement of pulley D and arm F to follow the winding of the wire on the spools and braking of the spools is referred to.
