641,594. Ball and roller cages. SHAFER, J. E. Dec. 12, 1946, No. 36704. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1945. [Class 12 (i)] A cage 11 with spaced pockets 30 for balls 17 or rollers, has intervening flanges 32 which form lubricant reservoirs 38 in communication, at the outer edges of the flanges 32, with the pockets 30 and which flanges 32 serve as lands riding on the outer race 12. The cage is in two parts 11a with webs 31 riveted or spot-welded together at 34. The curved edge at the junction of the web 31 with the flange 32 provides a communication groove 37 between the pockets while a concave recessed region 30a at the outer edge of a pocket gives communication with the reservoir space 38 below the flange 32. Seals are provided consisting of flanged retainers 18, flanged flingers 19 and intervening felt rings 20 preferably bonded to one of the flanged rings 18, 19.
