Abstract

A steel having the following composition, C 0.4-0.6 per cent; Mn 1.0-2.5 per cent; Si 0.5-1.0 per cent; Cr 3.0-6.5 per cent; Fe, with the usual impurities the remainder, is used as shank material for those tools equipped with hard metal in which the shank is tooled first, and is then equipped with the hard metal by brazing, after which it is stressed by repeated impact or wear, as in the case of rock-drills or coal-cutting chisels. The steel may also include 0.05-2.0 per cent of the carbide forming elements Mo, W, V, Ti, Ta, Nb, together with sufficient extra carbon, if necessary to ensure that 0.4-0.6 per cent of carbon remains unbound in the alloy.
