Abstract

640,988. Blasting ; blasting caps. ATLAS POWDER CO. Feb. 27, 1947, No. 5687. Convention date, May 16, 1946. [Classes 9 (i) and 68 (i)] In multiple bore hole blasting wherein a row of at least three generally aligned charged holes is detonated to break away a face and form a new face therebehind, the charges in at least three successively adjacent bore holes in the row are initiated at times separated by from 2 to 150 (preferably 20 to 75) milliseconds and preferably within approximately 300 milliseconds of the time of actuation of the detonation initiator in the first firing of these adjacent holes. There may be more than one row of holes, and each row may be generally parallel to the face to be broken away, with or without a row of holes at right-angles to such face. The firing-time separation may be obtained by the use of electric blasting caps having different firing times or connected to different circuits which are energized at separate times, or by particular arrangements of detonating fuses. The Specification contains examples of suitable caps and firing arrangements. The Figure shows a bore hole 20 loaded with a main explosive charge 22 and upper explosive charges 26, 30 separated by gravel stemmings 24, 28, 32. The main charge 22 is initiated by two similar electric blasting caps 34, 36, whilst the upper charges 26, 30 are initiated from the main charge 22 by detonating fuse 50. Specification 640,514 is referred to.
