Abstract

Organic acid dyestuffs contaminated by inorganic salts are purified by making a saturated solution of the dyestuff in a solvent which will also dissolve the inorganic salts, filtering off any remaining solid matter, adding to the filtrate a precipitant for the inorganic salt, and again filtering. The solvent may be water, an ether of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol, an ethanolamine, diacetone alcohol, furfuryl alcohol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, or a homologue of aminopropanol. The precipitants may be a mixture of an alcohol and an aromatic compound, (e.g. 2 mols. methanol to one vol, tuluol) or may contain propyl alcohol, benzene, furfuryl alcohol, naphtha, or xylol. Examples describe the purification of (1) Chromolar Yellow NGR, using carbitol as solvent and a methanol-toluene mixture as precipitant; (2) Fast Light Orange R, using ethylene glycol monoethyl ether as solvent and an ethanol-benzene mixture as thinner; (3) Azo Yellow A5W, using furfuryl alcohol as solvent and a propyl alcohol-xylol mixture as thinner. A diagrammatic drawing of a conventional assembly of apparatus is provided, in which the crude dye is dissolved at elevated temperature, and after the first filtration precipitation, and second filtration stages, the purified dye solution is evaporated on a drum drier, and the solvent and precipitant recovered and fractionated.
