Abstract
640,742. Furnaces for the heat-treatment of metals &c. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., .Ltd., DOVEY, D. M., and EVANS, C. J. March 2, 1948, No. 6578. [Class 51(ii)]. Apparatus for the heat-treatment of metal or other articles in a gas atmosphere comprises a hearth having a gas-circulating fan mounted centrally thereon and extending upwardly therefrom, the arrangement being such that articles to be treated may be stacked on the hearth around the fan so that gas may flow therethrough, a furnace for heating the articles on the hearth, the hearth and furnace being movable relatively to each other so that the hearth may be disposed in or removed from a heating zone of the furnace, and a chamber or cover for receiving or enclosing the hearth and articles, within or under which the articles may be, arranged or allowed to cool after heat-treatment. The apparatus shown comprises two circular hearths 1 and 2 mounted over a pit 3 having an access cover 4 each hearth being formed with annular channels 5 housing electric heating elements 6 and covered by a steel plate 7. Mounted centrally in each hearth is a centrifugal fan 8 for circulating decarburizing gas supplied through the hearth beneath a removable cover 14 or 15 adapted to fit into a sand seal 16, the gas being sucked downwardly and delivered radially beneath guide vanes 12 through articles 13 stacked around the fan. The covers may be provided with vents for. the escape of excess gas. A single bell type electric furnace 17 fitted with a lifting lug 18 is provided for cooperation with either hearth.
