Abstract
<PICT:0640123/IV (a)/1> The denier of artificial filaments is varied during production by connecting an auxiliary spinning pump 6, Fig. 1, in parallel with the main line spinning pump 3 supplying filament-forming material to the usual jet 4, the main pump being driven at constant speed and the auxiliary pump being driven intermittently under electrical controls which may be arranged to produce predetermined, in accordance with a repeating pattern, or random slubbing characteristics. As shown, several sets of main and auxiliary pumps 3, 6 are used to supply respective jets 4, the auxiliary pumps 6 being driven through worm gearing 8, 9 from a shaft 7, driven by a continuously running motor 21, through a dog or other clutch 14 adapted to be moved to the "drive" position by energization of a solenoid 27 impulsed under electronic control. With this form of the invention slub length can be varied as well as slub frequency. Where the output of the electronic unit is not sufficient to operate the clutch, the output may be used to control a relay unit having sufficient power to do so. The shaft 7 may, alternatively, be advanced by a ratchet-and-pawl mechanism actuated by the solenoid, Fig. 2 (not shown). The electronic control unit may impulse a number of solenoids each of which controls a number of clutches 14. Electronic units capable of producing a yarn for weaving a fabric having either a regularly or a randomly figured appearance are described. Specification 579,069 is referred to.
