[Class 68 (ii)] A wall adapted to form a water-tight structure in loose or swampy ground comprises prefabricated pillars A alternating with concrete piles P<SP>1</SP> cast in situ, elements E embedded in and projecting from the pillars connecting them to the piles. As shown in Fig. 3, each reinforced concrete pillar A is inserted into a previously driven tube C and the projecting ends of the elements E are protected by shields S. The tubes C are withdrawn, and tubes C<SP>1</SP> guided by shields S, are driven between each pair of pillars. Concrete is then poured into the tubes C<SP>1</SP> and the tubes and the shields are simultaneously withdrawn to allow this concrete to envelope the elements E. The pillar shown has a central bore V for insertion of a suction pipe (not shown) into an underground filter bed for water drainage. Filter columns G are also provided in recesses in the pillar and grout may be injected into the filtering material. On the other hand, the recesses may receive flushing pipes T, Fig. 7a. The pillar may have an enlarged shoe D which may be pointed or may be as shown. Various other forms of pillar are described, e.g. the pillar may be in two separable parts and the shields similarly formed. A channel beam may be embedded in a side of the pillar or the latter may have metal or concrete extensions. A pillar may be connected to sheet-piling, Fig. 9, by a partially embedded section of sheet Y.
