[Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A resilient, lubricant - impervious closure member for a lubricant nipple comprises a hollow cap 5 having a central pear-shaped recess 6, and a slit 8 in the top which is normally closed. The cap is fitted over a sleeve 3 projecting above and forming a continuation of a lubricant passage 4 formed in a metallic nipple adapted to be screwed into a threaded hole in the place of use. Radial pressure on the thin side walls of the cap causes distortion of the top to allow insertion of a lubricating nozzle in the slit 8. In a modification, Fig. 2, the resilient closure member forms part of the nipple comprising a shank 10, an integral nozzle engaging head part 14 and a small slit 17 in the top surface 18 of the closure member. A rigid reinforcing ring 19 is fitted in a groove in the upper end of the recess 16 which provides a fulcrum for the leverage effect required to open the slit 17 as before. The opening in the cap top may be in the form of a hole which when closed has no measurable diameter, or slit, or several slits meeting at a point. The grease gun nozzle may comprise a pointed end 24, Fig. 6, integral with a piston part 25 slidable in a sleeve 22, and a hollow guide shank 26 slidable in the bore 23 of the grease gun. The upward thrust of a spring 34 on the piston 25 is limited by stops 36 so that ports 27 in the shank 26 are in constant communication with a space 37. A resilient ring 33 is clamped between the lower end of sleeve 22 and a flange 31 on a sleeve 28 having limited movement with respect to sleeve 22. Application of grease under pressure moves the sleeve 22 nearer the nipple, thereby causing the ring 33 to crush the sides of the nipple head 14, effecting opening of the aperture 17 and admission of the nozzle 24. In a modification, Fig. 7, the nozzle 43B is slidably guided within the skirt 42 of a piston member which clamps the ring 41 against a flange 40. In another modification, Fig. 8, a number of jaws 54 are loosely attached to an inner sleeve 48A and on relative movement between sleeves 48A, 50 against the action of a spring 56, the conical surface 53A acts on the jaws 54 and forces them inwardly to engage the walls of the closure member. In a further modification, the jawgripping device shown in Fig. 8 is applied to the construction shown in Fig. 7. Fig. 10 shows a construction similar to that of Fig. 8 except that the spring 56 is omitted, the position of the outer sleeve 82 relative to the grease gun body being controlled by a lever 87 pivoted at 88 on the grease conduit 79 and engaging collars 85 on the sleeve 82.
