Abstract
595,696. Valve spindles. MARTIN. A. H. M. L., and LEWIS, A. L. May 2, 1945, No. 11172. [Class 135] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXVII] The invention relates to couplings between a rod or stem and the end of a spring surrounding and exerting an axial force thereon, and is described with reference to a poppet valve. A valve spring abutment 16 is coupled to the valve stem by a divided. cotter 12 seated in a groove 11 and fitting into a conical cup portion 13 of the abutment, the cotter parts being held together by a spring 32 and the abutment 16 is formed with an enlarged lower cage portion 14 into which the cotter parts can expand for removal of the valve. A light spring 17 rests on a washer 18 and urges the cotter into the cup 13. To remove the valve, the abutment 16 is raised by a valve lifter 19, Fig. 3, a valve guide extension 20 or a sleeve on the valve stem forcing the cotter parts out of the groove 11 into the cage 14. In modifications, the upper end of spring 17 encircles a lip on the cotter parts to hold them together, dispensing with the spring 32, and the lower end rests on a circlip or recess in the part 14. Alternatively, the cotter may be held in place by a member screwed into the part 14. In Fig. 10, the spring 17 forms the cage portion containing the cotter parts when forced out of the groove 11. A sharp-edged tool 27, Fig. 12, may be used for expanding the cotter, or it may be fitted with lips for engagement by the spring arms 29 of an extractor, Fig. 14, a central screwed stem 30 pushing in the end of the valve stem for withdrawing the cotter after the valve lifter relieves the pressure thereon.
