[Class 12 (i)] A bearing, such as a ball bearing, has a cover engaged by a spring which also engages the opposite face of the bearing or an opposite cover. In one form, Fig. 3, the outer race 17 is axially slidable in a sheet metal housing 14 and is engaged by two covers 18, 19 held together by a spring 20 having arms 23 with projections 24 entering slots in arms 21 on the inner cover 19. The arms 23 pass through slots in the wall 25 of the housing 14 so that they can move axially but not rotate. In a modification, Fig. 9, the arms 31 of one cover have laterally open or closed slots engaged by a plate spring 37 which bears against the other cover, the spring having projections 35 near its ends to prevent longitudinal displacement. The spring may engage either the outer or the inner cover, and in the latter case it is apertured or laterally slotted to pass the shaft. In another form, Fig. 11, the spring 45 has limbs 46 with inwardly bent ends 49 and also has a central aperture so that. it may be placed against either the inner cover 43 or the outer cover 44, the ends 49 engaging the other cover. This assembly of bearing and cover fittings may be inserted as a unit in the bearing housing which is axially slotted to receive the limbs of the spring and so prevents any tendency to rotation of the outer race and cover fittings. The spring may be so formed as to serve also as a cover.
