Abstract

632,711. Mounting bearings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., WOODFIELD, T. H., and MORTON, C. J. Aug. 1, 1946, No. 23005. Addition to 620,566. [Class 12 (i)] The ball-bearing mounting of the parent Specification is modified in that the base fingers provided on the adaptor for exerting axial pressure on the outer race form part of a separate member which is secured to the cap member, the fingers of which exert radial pressure on the outer race. By making the adaptor in two parts the degree of resiliency of the two sets of fingers may be varied. A washer 1 of sheet-metal has spring fingers 2 bent up from it to form a caplike portion at right angles to the washer, this part being similar to the cap described in Specification 632,772. To the exterior of the base of the cap 1 is applied another washer 3 having spring fingers 4 bent over, but lying spaced from, the interior surface of the base of the cap 1. The two parts may be held together by this bending over of the fingers 4 or additional securing means may be provided. In use the radially-acting fingers 2 grip the outer race of a ball-bearing, Fig. 2 (not shown), forming a resilient packing between it and the surface of an opening in the housing, while the axially-acting fingers 4 bear against one end of the outer race. To protect the fingers 4 from undue compression, they have projections 10 on the underside of those parts which overlie the washer 1.
