638,350. Compound sheet materials. JENKINS, D. V.; and UNIREP, Ltd. June 20, 1946, No. 18528. [Class 140] Laminated materials are made by soaking or impregnating thin sheets of wood such as balsa wood in a volatile liquid and, after removal of each sheet from the liquid but whilst it is still wet, applying to one or both of its faces a solid film of a tough and pliable material which is soluble in the liquid, the material being then dried at room or elevated temperature and with or without pressure. The volatile liquid may be acetone and the film may be cellulose acetate, celluloid, or polymethyl methacrylate. While still wet the laminated material may be cut to shape, e.g. with a guillotine, or moulded. When a moulded article is to be formed, wooden inserts or strengthening pieces may be applied to the initial wood sheet by gluing, and when the sheet is to be moulded into tubular form, the adjoining edges may be united by gluing or stapling. A number of wood sheets each with a film on one side may be laminated, while still wet, with the grain crossing. The volatile liquid may contain a dye, the wood or the film may be printed, or a coloured or printed paper sheet soaked in solvent may be applied on top of the film. The product is suitable for making toys such as model aircraft, or boxes.
