Abstract

628,180. Cellular paper &c. filling for laminated material. MAY, G., and DUFAYCHROMEX, Ltd. July 24, 1946, No. 22086. [Classes 96 and 140] A cellular filling for a double skin structural material is made by applying lines of adhesive such as casein to flexible material such as paper previously impregnated with a thermosetting resin, superimposing the sheets with the adhesive lines 15, 16 staggered in alternate layers, and cutting the adhering flat plies along lines 19 transverse to the adhesive lines into slices which are opened out to produce a cellular structure, Fig. 5. The structure is made rigid by heating to cure the resin. The resin may be phenol- or cresol-aldehyde, spiritsoluble or water-soluble, and may be applied as an aqueous solution to high wet-strength paper. The lines of adhesive are applied after drying the impregnated paper, e.g. as described in Specification 591,772. The final heating of the expanded honeycomb material is effected while it is secured in a frame, hot air being circulated through the honeycomb, e.g. by a fan. The cellular material is secured between laminations, e.g. paper or plywood, either before or after heating to cure the resin. Specifications 613,529 and 3178/40 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) also are referred to.
