Abstract
638,073. Automatic control systems. MARCONI INSTRUMENTS, Ltd. April 18, 1947, No. 10447. Drawings to Specification. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (c)] The pH value of a reagent is controlled by using the voltage from a pair of electrodes in the reagent for automatic control, or as an indicator for manual control, of an element having a characteristic which compensates for the non-linearity of voltage output with changes in hydrogen ion concentration, so that a substantially linear control of concentration is obtained. The compensating element may be a non-linear thermionic valve amplifier (see Group XL (c)), to which the electrode voltage is applied. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the electrode voltage is measured by a linear potentiometer which carries on the same shaft a cam so shaped that a follower will effect a linear control. In a further embodiment, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the cam is replaced by a second potentiometer having a graded resistance element. The output of this potentiometer is used to effect control. In a still further embodiment, the compensating cam is used to move camactuated switches nearer to, or further from, the axis of a variable dwell actuating cam.
