Abstract
637,640. Grinding springs, wire thread inserts, &c. HELICOIL CORPORATION. May 29, 1948, No. 14571. Convention date, June 20, 1947. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] Springs, wire thread inserts, &c. are made by coiling a slightly oversize wire in one plane, then sizing the wire by grinding, rolling, milling, or planing, and finally applying the twist. A wire B is fed through a shaped guide 12 between a grooved mandrel 10 and grooved rolls 14, 16. The wire is coiled in one plane between the rolls 14, 16 and the roll 16 cooperates with the mandrel to size the wire by rolling. A blade 20 then deflects the wire to determine the pitch. In modifications the wire is coiled by an off-set abutment then sized by rotary grinding wheels or milling tools or by drawing through a sharp-edged die.
