Abstract

637,265. Ventilating vehicles. BRITISH TRANSPORT COMMISSION, (formerly LONDON PASSENGER TRANSPORT BOARD), OTTAWAY, E. C., and WICKS, J. W. Oct. 22, 1947, No. 28277. [Class 137] [Also in Group XIII] In a heating and ventilating system for the interior of a vehicle, the coolant from the internal combustion engine 10 is passed through a heat exchanger 15, 16 mounted in an air trunk 21 having branches 26, 23, 29 communicating respectively with the body interior, an air inlet 25 outside the body, and an exhaust to the exterior, and means, i.e. a unidirectional fan 22 and valves 35, 36, for inducing air flow in the trunk either from the body to the exhaust opening or from the inlet to the body, the air in both cases passing through the heat exchanger. Branches 26, 31 to the body interior at either end of the air trunk are connected by a duct 34. The valves 35, 36 are interconnected so that when the air inlet duct 24 is closed and the exhaust branch 29 is open, as shown, air is drawn in through ducts 27, 32 from the vehicle interior, e.g. from the upper and lower decks of an omnibus, and passed through the heat exchanger 15, 16 to the exterior. The heat exchanger and air trunk 21 may be mounted beneath the omnibus stairs, the engine coolant being circulated by a pump 11 through pipes 12, 14, 18, an expansion tank 13 and the heat exchanger. A valve 39 controls the relative quantities of air from the fresh air inlet duct 24 and an extra inlet from the upper deck space. The valves 35, 36, 39 may be thermostatically controlled. The Provisional Specification describes also a pair of fans in the air trunk, driven by a reversible motor and each one adjacent a heat exchanger, whilst the fresh air duct and exhaust duct extend from a single branch of the air trunk.
