Abstract

637,009. Photometers. KING, E. J., and KEELER, C. H. May 3, 1948, No. 12126. [Class 97 (i)] A photo-meter, particularly for determining the opacity of specimens, comprises a carrier for the specimen through which a main light beam is directed into an eyepiece and an annular rotatable neutral grey filter wedge graded circumferentially surrounding the main beam, an auxiliary beam being directed through the circumference of the wedge to form an image in the eyepiece adjacent that of the main beam. As shown, the carrier comprises compartments 71, 72, the former holding a cell 74 containing a standard liquid and the latter a cell 75 containing the liquid to be measured. The main beam 61 provided by a diffusing screen 58 illuminated by a lamp 25 passes through the central clear aperture of a filter bridge 79 provided between glass plates 77, 78 and, after passing, the cell 75 is directed by the surfaces 39, 41 of a prism 37 and by a field lens 46 into the eyepiece 29. The auxiliary beam 60 from the lamp passes through the graded filter area of the wedge 79 and after passing through the cell 74 is directed to the eyepiece by the prism 37 and lens 46. The filter is mounted in a ring 82 rotatable in the casing to equalize the brightness of the two images viewed in the eyepiece, the angular position of the ring being read on a suitable scale. Colour filters may be inserted in the eyepiece for measurement over different spectral ranges. The lamp house 62 may be removed and the diffusing screen 58 illuminated by daylight.
