Abstract
A mixture of styrene and a phenolic liquid derived from the p Anacardiace family of plants is copolymerized by heat. An aldehyde material may be incorporated into the Anacardiac liquid before, during or after the addition of the styrene. Suitable phenolic liquids are cashew nut shell liquid, anacardic acid, cardanol, or ethers thereof, hydrogenated cardanol, esters of cardanol, marking nut shell liquid or Japanese lac. The liquids may be initially in a polymerized state. Examples (1) to (3) employ cashew nut shell liquid which has been polymerized to a molasses or syrupy-like state. In example (1) it is dissolved in styrene and heated for 50 hours at 100 DEG C. to yield a tough, solid, extrudable mass. In example (2) it is heated in styrene for 16 hours at 100 DEG C. yielding a thermoplastic non-tacky, soft, rubbery solid which may be milled into rubber. In example (3) it is dissolved in styrene and heated for 20 hours at 100 DEG C. yielding a plastic solid which dissolved in toluene, applied to a copper conductor and baked yields a tough, flexible insulation. In example (4), cardanol acetate and styrene heated together yield a rubbery product soluble in toluene to a film-forming solution. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of a dark brown viscous liquid obtained by heating together styrene and cashew nut shell liquid which has been freed from vericant constituents and metals by treatment with diethyl sulphate and sulphuric acid.
