Abstract

636,450. Electric blasting-fuzes. LOWE, A. J., CALDWELL, A. M. U., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 30, 1948, No. 11876. [Class 9 (i)] Relates to fuzes for blasting- cartridges in which a gas which does not support combustion is confined under pressure with a combustible gas-producing heating charge in a container having a sealing device yielding at a predetermined pressure. The invention consists in providing an electric fuze-head comprising brass foils 2, 21 cemented to a press-board sheet 1, the foils being connected by a resistance wire 4 about 1 mm. long and 0.025 mm. thick, bridging a stepped portion 3 of the foil 2 and the press-board. Furthermore, a bead 6 is built up around the bridged ends of the foils, by drying successive coats of a paste formed by mixing potassium perchlorate and dinitrosopentamethylene-tetramine in the proportions 3: 1 by weight in a 5 per cent solution of nitrocellulose in an amyl-acetate/amyl alcohol mixture and subsequently applying two coats 11 of collodion. Insulated leading wires 7, 7<SP>1</SP> are soldered to the foils and the bead protrudes from a cast sulphur filling 10 in a paper tube 9. It is stated that the bead will not ignite while the fuze is exposed to atmospheric pressure even when a current sufficient to fuse the wire 4 is applied, but when in contact with a gasproducing charge in a blasting apparatus, as described in Specification 480,330, charged with CO 2 at a pressure of 55 atmospheres, a current less than that required to fuse the wire will ignite the bead.
