Abstract

636,228. Changing wheel gauge; adjusting height of body from ground. PONCET, M. V. July 8, 1947, No. 18050. Convention date, July 9, 1946. [Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] The track of a wheeled or endless track agricultural tractor (see Group XXXI), is varied by mounting the endless track sprockets 13, Fig. 1 and 2, or road wheels, on a pair of side frames 2 which are supported by members 3 of U-shaped cross-section slidable in a chassis 1. Adjustment is effected by mounting in each end of the chassis a rotatable hollow shaft 4, Fig. 6, having an internal thread coacting with a threaded spindle 5 fixed to one of the frames 2, and an oppositelythreaded sleeve 6 fixed to the other frame 2. The shafts 4 are rotated by the manual operation of a handle 11, Fig. 4, driving a shaft 9, bevelgears 10, shafts 8, bevel-wheels 8a and bevelwheels 7 which are integral with the shafts 4. In order that the endless tracks 12, Fig. 1, or road wheels, may be adjusted for height with respect to the chassis, the endless track sprockets 13 are rotatably mounted on arms 14 pivoted on the frames 2, said arms having sectors 15. The two sectors 15 on one side can be turned simultaneously by cables 16, Fig. 4, which pass over a common sheave 17 and which are wound on a drum 18 so that the track sprockets on one of the frames 2 can be raised or lowered whilst those on the other side are moved in the opposite direction. The drums 18 are driven from an engine shaft extension 30a on which is fixed a pinion 45 in constant mesh with pinions 46, 47, which pinions drive shafts 48, 49, oppositely cut worms 50, 51, and pinions 52, 53, which are loose on a shaft 20, respectively. The loose pinions 52, 53, each having dogs projecting from their opposing faces, can drive the shaft 20 in either direction according as to which dogs are engaged with a dog clutch 54 which is slidable on the shaft 20 and rotatable therewith. Worms 21 at each end of the shaft 20 drive worm-wheels on shafts 19 of the drums 18.
