Abstract

636,173. Step ladders. FREEMAN, A. Jan. 1, 1946, No. 31. [Class 20 (ii)] Relates to portable step-ladders of the kind comprising a ladder portion fitted with steps and a hinged supporting back frame, and having each of the spaced sides of the ladder portion 1 fashioned from a single length of metal tubing bent so as to provide front and rear limbs 4, 5, and is characterized in that the limbs are rigidly connected at intervals by brackets 6 each of which comprises portions 11, 13 disposed in spaced parallel planes for attachment respectively to the outer and inner sides of the limbs and an intermediate portion 15 extending horizontally between the limbs tor the support of one end of a step. The lower ends of the front and rear limbs 4, 5 are welded to small foot plates 9. The portion 11 may have one or more lugs 16 adapted to be turned down on the end of a step to retain it. The steps may be of wood or other material, but are preferably, as shown, in the form of an element described in Specification 636,176. The hinged back frame 3 is fabricated from steel tubing. A tie member to limit the opening of the ladder is preferably, as shown, of the character described in Specification 636,178. Specification 594,987 also is referred to.
