Abstract
635,874. Delivering measured quantities of liquid. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd. (Permutit Co.). Feb. 17, 1948, No. 4660. [Class 106(v)] [Also in Group XXVIII] An apparatus for delivering measured quantities of liquid from a storage vessel comprises a measuring tank placed above the storage vessel and having an inlet connected to the storage vessel and at a lower level a valved outlet pipe through which liquid drawn from the storage vessel can be discharged, a vacuum-producing device connected to the measuring tank, and a loop seal having one leg connected to the vacuum-producing device and the other to the atmosphere and operative to break the vacuum in the measuring tank when more than the desired measured quantity has been drawn into the tank but before the tank is full so that liquid above the inlet from the storage vessel will then drain back to the storage vessel, and thereafter the measured quantity of liquid can be discharged by opening the valve in the outlet pipe. Strong acid from a storage vessel 16 is drawn up, by suction from an ejector 22 and pipe 21, through a pipe 17 into a measuring tank 18 from the bottom of which leads a U-shaped outlet pipe 27, 28, 30 closed by a diaphragm valve 29. The acid rises under the suction up into a riser 20 at the top of the measuring tank 18 until acid in a U-seal 33, 34, which is open at 38 to the atmosphere and is connected by a pipe 32 to the riser 20, is sucked into the riser, whereupon the vacuum is broken and acid in the riser and tank 18 flows back into the storage vessel 16 until the level falls to the opening of the pipe 17 into the tank 18. The suction pump 22 is then stopped and the diaphragm valve 29 opened to allow the acid to discharge from the tank 18 through pipes 27, 28, 30, U-seal 33, 34 and outlet 36 into a dilution tank 15 to which at the same time water from a pipe 46, 51 is being added. Valves controlling the diaphragm valve 29, the ejector 22 and the water supply to the pipe 46 are operated by a motor which also drives a control mechanism 3 driving a valve 2, but may also be hand operated. Water from the pipe 46 may be shut off by a float controlled valve 49 when a certain level in the tank 15 is reached. A suction ejector built in the valve mechanism 2 sucks up dilute acid from the tank 15 through a pipe 14 at a certain point in the operation of the valve mechanism 2, the valve controlling the water supply to the pipe 46 and the diaphragm valve 29 being closed. Liquid is sucked up the pipe 14 for a predetermined time but a float valve may be provided to stop the flow into the pipe 14 when a predetermined quantity of the dilute acid has been withdrawn from the tank 15. The float valves controlling the flow into and out of the tank 15 may be replaced by electrode operated valves.
