Abstract
635,674. Resistances measuring. MARCONI INSTRUMENTS, Ltd., and BROCKELSBY, C. F. March 23, 1948, No. 8556. [Class 37] A circuit for measuring resistance comprises a bridge comprising resistances R1, R2, R3 and the anode-cathode path and cathode resistance R4, P of a valve, the resistance P being tapped at S to a resistance R5 connected to the grid of valve V and the unknown resistance X being connected between a point of constant potential and a tap SW on resistance R5. In operation, the bridge is balanced in the absence of X by setting S to the cathode end of P and varying R4; X is then put in circuit and the taps SW (coarse) and P (fine) adjusted to restore balance, the value of X corresponding to the settings of SW and P. An adjustable potential source may replace R4. A protective resistance may be connected to X2 to prevent X1, X2 being short-circuited. Resistances P, R5 may be calibrated in logarithmic units. The resistance X may be a specimen whose resistance varies with moisture so that the circuit acts as a moisture meter. Resistance R2 may be connected to the cathode instead of to P, or a resistance may be connected between the cathode and a positive point on source B.
