Abstract

635,643. Peak voltage measurements. SCOLES, G. J., and METROPOLITAN. VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 25, 1947, No. 31195. [Class 37] Means for producing a voltage corresponding to the peak voltage of a sawtooth waveform comprise a storage condenser connected in series with a charging thermionic valve, and in parallel with a discharging valve, both valves being rendered conducting during peak voltage periods, the receiving sawtooth waveform also controlling the charging of a buffer condenser with slow or interrupted discharge means, so that the voltage across the buffer condenser, which controls the charging valve, does not fall appreciably during the fly-back period. In Fig. 1, the sawtooth waveform is applied to valve V<4> which has a long time constant circuit C2, R3 connected to its cathode, so that the output from the cathode consists of a modified sawtooth waveform in which any steep fall in voltage is eliminated. The cathode output is applied to valve V5 so that condenser C3 charges up to the peak value of the sawtooth waveform. Synchronizing pulses are applied to valve V7 to provide discharge impulses for condenser C3 at periods corresponding to the sawtooth waveform peaks.- The arrangement is such that the voltage across condenser C3 then follows variations in the peak levels of the sawtooth waveform. This voltage may be used in strobing apparatus to vary the operational voltage according to the peak amplitude of a sawtooth waveform, so that strobing occurs at a fixed relative position along the timebase. In an alternative arrangement, a discharge valve is connected in place of resistance R3, which is rendered conducting by pulses which occur during the forward stroke of the sawtooth waveform so that the voltage applied to the grid of valve 5 is maintained constant during the first portion of the fly-back period at a level corresponding to the peak amplitude of the sawtooth waveform. This eliminates the small fluctuations in the voltage across condenser 3. Specification 621,752 is referred to.
