Abstract

630,219. Saw-tooth generating circuits. SCOLES, C. J., and METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 19, 1947, No. 4853. [Class 40 (vi)] In a relaxation oscillator in which a capacitor is charged during each cycle to hold the associated valve cut-off for a peiod determined by its rate of discharge the discharge circuit comprises a main and auxiliary path, the latter including a rectifier in series with a resistor and an adjustable bias potential. During the charging period the capacitor is charged to a higher potential than that of the bias potential so that on cessation of the charging current it then discharges rapidly down to the bias potential through the short time-constant path including the rectifier and the adjustable bias potential and then more slowly through the main path which is of long time-constant, the recurrence frequency of the oscillator thus being variable over a wide range by adjustment of the bias potential. The Figure shows a blocking oscillator in which capacitor C is initially charged through the valve V so that its upper plate is left negatively charged and the valve blocks. The capacitor then discharges rapidly through the short time-constant circuit comprising diode D resistors R1 and R2 until the potential of the upper plate of the capacitor has fallen so that diode D no longer conducts, when the discharge is completed through resistor R3. The level at which the diode ceases to conduct and therefore the duration of the fast discharge may be adjusted by-mean.s of the tapping on potentiometer R2. The hard-valve V may be replaced by a thyratron.
