Abstract
743,255. Pulse modulation circuits. TELEFUNKEN GES., [formerly TELEFUNKEN GES. FUR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE]. Nov. 28, 1952 [Nov. 28, 1951], No. 30153/52. Classes 40 (5) and 40 (6). In a saw-tooth wave generator for converting amplitude modulation pulses into saw-tooth waveforms of corresponding width, the short flank of the wave is generated by charging a capacitor through a unilateral conducting device in response to an input pulse and the long flank is generated by discharging the capacitor through a constant current source, the discharge being terminated before the potential across the capacitor reverses and thus before substantial curvature is exhibited. In Fig. 1 a capacitor Co is rapidly charged through a diode d1 by a positive pulse applied to input terminal 2 and slowly discharges through a constant current source S which maintains the discharge linear and which may comprise a voltage source and a high resistance or pentode valve. The discharge terminates when the capacitor voltage has fallen sufficiently for the diode d1 to become conductive since a diode d2 (or a small resistance) will clamp the anode of diode d1 to earth potential. The duration of the output wave depends upon the amplitude of the input pulse and by horizontally slicing the output wave a pulse whose width is modulated in accordance with the amplitude of the input pulse may be obtained. Phasemodulated pulses may be obtained by differentiation. In Fig. 3 negative input pulses charge the capacitor through a diode d1 and the capacitor discharges through a resistor R1 connected to a positive voltage the discharge continuing until grid current flows in the output amplifier valve T1. A diode d3 limits the maximum amplitude of the input pulses. The diode d2 of Fig. 1 is replaced by a resistor R. The circuit of Fig. 5 may also be arranged to receive positive pulses (Fig. 4, not shown).
