[Class 138 (ii)] In a laundry washing machine having a rotary cage comprising an outer cylinder and an inner perforated cylinder supported within the outer cylinder by means of circular end plates and in which the space between the cylinders is sub-divided by longitudinally extending strips of metal, extending the whole length of the cylinders and secured to both, the outer cylinder 3, Fig. 2, is built up of a plurality of discontinuous segments providing spaced gaps 5 extending the whole length of the outer cylinder and the space between the cylinders is divided by channel members 4 disposed intermediate the gaps 5, into a plurality of pockets of arcuate section which communicate with the interior of the cage through the perforations in the inner cylinder 1 and with the exterior through the gaps 5. The annular space 7, Fig. 1, between the cylinders is closed at each end by flanged rings 6, while the ends of the inner cylinder are closed by flanged plates 8 to which are riveted spiders 9 having trunnions 11 bolted thereon. A door, e.g. at 2, Fig. 2, or doors may be provided on the periphery of the cage or at one end or at both ends. Circumferential bands 12, Fig. 1, are fitted round the outer cylinder. The inner cylinder is fitted with beaters or lifters 13, Fig. 2. The inner cylinder 1 may be divided longitudinally into two or three pockets by partitions which pockets may be further divided into any number of pockets by vertical partitions. In a modification the channel members 4 may be disposed at the edges of the gaps 5 and the arcuate pockets so formed communicate with the exterior of the cage through perforations on the peripheral face of the segments or in the webs of the channel members.
