Abstract

Trichloriminocyanuric acid is prepared by passing a stream of chlorine, while being activated by light radiation, over a cooled flowing film of a solution of cyanuric acid in aqueous caustic alkali. Preferably, the solution flows down the outer surface of a water-cooled tube which is surrounded by an outer tube through which the irradiated chlorine passes. The yield is improved by subjecting the solution to a preliminary chlorination by passing chlorine through the solution. The chlorine may flow at a rate at least six times the theoretical rate. The annular space through which the chlorine flows may be irradiated with light sources consisting of ordinary gas-filled bulbs, strip-lights and an ultra-violet lamp.
