Abstract

Silver chloride is purified by passing chlorine through a molten mass thereof, e.g. at 500-550 DEG C., and preferably also whilst cooling until small crystals appear. The molten mass is thereupon poured on to a mica sheet, and the globules so formed are pressed between glass plates, at room temperature or, if necessary, at 120-150 DEG C. to form " windows," transparent to infra-red radiation, for bolometers. The silver chloride employed is preferably produced by precipitation of silver nitrate solution with a hydrochloric acid solution saturated with chlorine.
