Abstract

634,222. Stoppers. LEVIN, D. May 28, 1947, No: 14241. [Class 125 (iii)] A closure device for a bottle or like container comprises an inner plug member, which fits in the container mouth, and an outer rotatable cap member, both members having liquid discharge apertures. When the cap is rotated it closes at least one liquid aperture and is displaced axially to bring complementary surfaces on the cap and plug into tight sealing engagement. A projecting cylindrical portion of the plug co-operates with a complementary cylindrical inner surface of the cap to form a rotatable mounting for the cap and also provide a liquid-tight seal between cap and plug. In the form shown in Fig. 2, for sprinkling, an inner resilient plug 11 fits in the bottle neck, and a threaded cap 15 screws on to the bottle neck. Liquid is dispensed via bore 19 which may be lined with a rigid tube 20, and bore 21, the cylindrical walls of members 11 and 15 being in liquidtight contact. When cap 15 is screwed down, surfaces 18 and 14 engage to seal bores 20, 21. Instead of screwing on to the bottle neck, cap 15 may screw on to the plug or a ferrule thereon. A number of eccentric bores such as 20 may be provided and the upper' surface of the plug may be so shaped that the bore in the cap is sealed before the bore or bores in the plug, to facilitate the return to the bottle of liquid trapped between cap and plug. Upward movement of the cap may be limited by turning in the lower edge of the cap below a flange on the plug, as below the ferrule. In another form, Fig 3, for steady pouring, liquid outlet passages 25, 30 and air inlet passages 26, 31 are provided, the air inlet tube projecting at 27. A slight rotation of the cap moves the inlet and outlet passages out of register and also forces surfaces 24, 29, which are never separated, into closer sealing contact. Relative rotation of cap and plug is limited by engagement of a stepped portion of the screw threads on ferrule 32 with an interruption in the screw threads on the cap. In the form shown in Fig. 11, the sealing effect of the cylindrical surface of the plug portion 46 is increased by flexible annular ribs 47 acting like piston rings; an annular flange 48 surrounds the upper end of bore 49 for a similar purpose. The plug may be of plastic, a bush 50 of cork or rubber being fitted on a fluted portion 51 and held between a shoulder 52 and a flange 53 in liquid-tight engagement with a surface 54. According to the provisional specification, relative movement of cap and plug may be limited by means of a spring detent and co-operating recess, or by rigid stops.
