Abstract
633,956. Portable fans. SZULC, J., and MILEWSKI, M. July 8, 1947, No. 17962. [Class 110(i)] In a portable electric fan driven by a battery, the moving parts are enclosed by the lid of the battery casing when the fan is not in use. The driving motor 15, which is preferably of the type described in Specifications 632,295 and 632,307. [both in Group XXXV], is in permanent connection with one terminal 48, Fig. 9, of the battery 14 through a spring 36, a link 32 and other metal parts. When a catch 41 is released, the lid 12, which is pivoted at 24, is raised by the spring 36 into the position shown. A metal strip 50 then makes contact with the other battery terminal 52 to complete the circuit. A strip 66 of insulating material bears against the terminal 52 to limit movement of the lid in the opening direction. When the lid is closed, the strip 66 prevents the terminal 52 from touching adjacent metal parts. One blade 17 is fixed to the motor shaft 16, and the other blade 17 is loosely mounted on the shaft with its hub 60, Fig. 7, sandwiched between the hub 53 of the fixed blade and a bent-over portion 54, Figs. 5 and 6a. The blades are nested together when the lid is closed, but in operation take up diametrically opposite positions, with the edge 61 resting against the fold 55. Each part 53, 54 is domed at 56, and a ,securing pin may pass through two holes 57 to engage a notch on the shaft 16. Alternatively, the shaft is provided with a ferrule 16a which is secured to one dome 56 by a brass eyelet 56a. The ferrule is secured to the shaft and eyelet by spot soldering. The casing may be of plastic material instead of metal. The dry battery may be replaced by an accumulator, the charger for which may be housed within the casing. According to the Provisional Specification, the lid may be arranged to fold beneath the casing, when open, to form a base, or to fold at an angle to form a supporting strut. The blades may be mounted on a countershaft driven, as by a belt or chain, from the motor. The countershaft may be carried on an arm pivoted about a point which may be so located relative to the motor shaft that the driving belt is put under tension when the arm is swung into the operative position.
