Abstract

633,897. Moving signs. AITKEN, H. J. P. July 26, 1947, No. 20188. [Class 3(i)] In a display apparatus comprising an endless band 23 which is moved intermittently or continuously past an aperture or apertures and upon which is mounted the matter to be displayed, the band is secured to and supported by cross members 45 which are connected to side chains 22 which pass over guide wheels mounted on each side of the band, the side chains being operatively connected to move in unison. The side chains 22 are guided over a pair of sprocket wheels 11 and pairs of grooved guide wheels, as shown in Fig. 3, and are adjusted for tension by screw-and-nut means which varies the angular position of supports 15 on which the sprockets 11 and guide wheels 12-14 are mounted. An electric motor 53 drives each chain independently through the guide wheels 8 which in turn are chain-connected to the wheels 7, 10. These driven wheels are independently mounted on fixed spindles on plain bearings; the idler wheels are mounted on ball bearings on fixed spindles and the sprocket wheels 11 are fixed to a common rotatable shaft to keep the chains moving in unison. Idler rollers 64 prevent the weight of the band forcing the chains 22 off the sprockets 11. The band 23 is pinned to the cross rods 45, arranged alternately on each side as shown in Fig. 5, and also sewn, and these rods are attached to the chains 22 by flexible connections 46 which ride on the inner flange of the guide wheels so that the band follows the wheel contour. In an alternative construction the rods are attached by brackets to the chain and the band may be held to the rods by press studs or clamps. Sprocket wheels with or without a flange to support the flexible connections 46 may be used in place of the guide wheels. The supporting frame is mounted on castors 54 and is enclosed in a casing, the viewing aperture 37 having electric lamps 42 mounted on each side.
