Abstract

633,861. Hydraulic presses. BURTON, L. J. March 10, 1947, No. 6659. [Class 69 (ii)] In a hydraulic press comprising a hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly mounted in a frame which consists of opposed metal sidewalls having an upper cross - wall spaced from the upper end thereof to form an upper compartment and an intermediate cross-wall spaced from the lower end thereof to form a lower compartment, the intermediate cross-wall constitutes a work table beneath the hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly which is mounted in the frame beneath the upper cross-wall and is independently guided by external guide-elements engaging guides on the inner faces of the opposed side-walls, which latter, together with the upper cross-wall are formed as a metal casting or fabricated by welding; the upper compartment may contain a hydraulic pump and liquid reservoir, and a press head displaceable by the pistons and cylinder may be adapted to co-operate with the intermediate cross-wall. The main frame is constituted by metal side-walls 1, Fig. 1, integral with a baseplate 2, whilst longitudinal partitions divide the space above the upper cross-wall 3 into three compartments, oil reservoir 6, pump housing 7 and a conduit chamber 8. A manually-controlled valve 11 provides for connecting either of two conduits 9 and 10, Fig. 4, which pass through chamber 8, to a pump 13 in the housing 7. Conduits 14 and 15 provide for communication between the reservoir 6 and the valve 11 and pump 13 respectively. The conduit 10, which includes a pre-filling valve 17 fed from the reservoir 6, opens into the interior of a hollow piston 16 fixed to the crosswall 3 and when it is connected to the pump 13 causes the press to extend. The conduit 9 passes through the wall of the piston 16 and opens into an annular space between the latter and a cylinder 18, Fig. 1, reciprocable upon the guide elements over most of the axial length of the piston 16, thereby enabling the press to be retracted. The press head is fitted to the underside of the cylinder to co-operate, in the extended position, with a mould 26 positioned upon the intermediate cross-wall 27. The space beneath wall 27 is stated to be used for housing an ejector cylinder or mechanically-operated ejector-gear. The housing 7 may also contain a motor for driving the pump 13.
