Abstract
633,771. Refrigerating; Feedwater heating systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and HOPKIRK, K. R. Oct. 14, 1946, No. 30552. [Classes 29 and 64(i)] In a substantially closed cooling system for an electrical generator 1 driven by a steam turbine through a shaft 7, cooling gas is withdrawn from the generator 1 through a pipe 2, is compressed by a compressor 3, is cooled at substantially constant pressure in coolers 4a, 4b, fed with condensate from the steam turbine and in cooler 4c fed with circulating water, drives the impeller of a gas turbine 5 which is coupled to the compressor 3 by a shaft 6 and passes back to the generator 1 to cool the windings. The cooler 4b is supplied with fresh condensate and the cooler 4a with condensate which has undergone one stage of pre-heating (i.e. feed-heating), the condensate then undergoing two further stages of feedheating. The shaft 6 may be driven either by the steam turbine shaft or by an electric motor 8. If the cooling fluid is air, a vent fitted with a filter is inserted in the connection between the compressor 3 and the precooler 4a, or air may be withdrawn from the generator 1 by an auxiliary compressor so maintaining the pressure in the generator 1 less than atmospheric. If hydrogen is used as the cooling fluid the pressure is maintained greater than atmospheric and the system is not vented. De-icing equipment may be fitted.
