Abstract

633,634. Photographic contact printing. STEWART, L. R. Jan. 21, 1947, No. 1841. [Class 98 (ii)] Materials such as fabric, leather, paper, plastics and furs are impregnated with an aqueous solution of a leuco ester combination or compound known by the Trade name " Algosol," exposed to light rays through photographic negatives to render portions of the " Algosol " insoluble in water, washed to remove the still soluble portions and, finally framed and dried. " Algosols " are obtainable from the American Cyanamid Corporation, New York, or the General Dyestuff Corporation, New York, they are soluble in water but are rendered insoluble by the action of light and are available in a wide range of colours. In the case of certain of them, such as Algosols 04B and IRRD, formic acid may be added to the solution to accelerate the action of light on the dye and in some instances it has been found that the use of urea or hygroscopic agents such as glycerine have a favourable accelerating influence. As described with reference to drawings a fabric 12 is fed under a roller 17 within a tray 14 containing dye solution 15 to squeeze rollers 18, 19 and passes over rollers 23 with pins 23<SP>1</SP> to engage the selvage as it moves along, and then around driven transparent cylinders 24, 27 fitted with internal light units 25, 28, both of which cylinders may carry negatives when both sides of the fabric are to be printed. Washing is effected by water from sprays 62, 64 and in baths 39, 43, 46 and 49, the first of which may be provided with soapy water from receptacle 61<SP>1</SP>, and from the washing mechanism the fabric passes round a drying and framing drum 50 which has pins 50<SP>1</SP> to pierce and grip the selvage and stretch the fabric to its original size and it is, finally, wound up at 54. If more than one colour is desired the fabric may be passed through another identical set of equipment which is provided with another sensitizer. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 417,588 and 523,296.
