Abstract

633,616. Collapsable buildings. AJNE, C. A. March 26, 1945, No. 7578. [Classes 20 (i), 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIII] In a building structure having a skeleton framing comprising intersecting framing elements maintaining building sections in place, the tightening between adjacent building sections is effected by framing elements inserted in grooves in opposite edges of the building sections, and by framing elements intersected by the framing elements in the grooves, coupling members between two aligned framing elements at the point of inter-connection with a third being carried by said aligned elements and extending through the intersecting element. Fig. 2 shows a framing element 10 inserted in opposite grooves of building elements 4, 6 and aligned elements 14, 16 coupled by a screw 29 passing through the element 10. The framing element 16 is formed of two similar grooved batons 18, 20, Fig. 3, assembled to provide a central'channel 26 in the element. A cylindrical chamber closed by a bored plug 30 houses the head of the screw 29 which is accessible by a screw-driver 38 (see Group XXIII) passed through the channel 26. The element 14 is constructed similarly to the element 18, the end of the screw 29 being received in its channel 26. The ends of both aligned elements 14, 16 have tongues 34 which fit into grooves 36 in the intersecting element 10. Two modifications of this method of coupling in which machine screws are used instead of wood screws are described. In one of these modifications the framing elements are of circular section and are sheathed in metal. Instead of being inserted in the edges of blocks 4, 6 the element 10 may be inserted in opposite grooves in a pair of half-posts which are pressed together by the tightening of the screw 29. Fig. 11 shows another method of coupling in which, instead of a screw, hooks 80, 80a secured to the elements 14, 16 by screws, are used. The hooks are accommodated within an aperture 88 provided in the intersecting element 10. A further, smaller, cavity 89 in the element 10 allows for movement of the hook 80a in engagement and disengagement. Fig. 13 shows a coupling consisting of a rotatable locking hook 102 having a shaft 104 journalled in a bracket 106 on one element 16, and a stationary locking member 108 secured to the other aligned member 16. The hook consists of a plate attached to the shaft 104 provided with a flange 110 which engages the member 108.
