Abstract
633,551. Valve voltmeters, PRINZ, D. G. Aug. 20, 1946; No. 24749. [Class 37] [Also in Group XL (c)] A system for the amplification of direct voltages and/or currents comprises a D.C. valve amplifier and means operated by the output of the amplifier for re-adjusting the correct zero. Fig. 1 shows a D.C. amplifier of conventional type in which improved linearity is obtained by negative feed-back across resistor 9 to the input circuit 6, 7 and in which the zero error may be corrected for by shorting the input and causing the output voltage to vary the setting of the bias potentiometer 11 by means of a motor, Fig. 3 (not shown), until the output voltage is zero. A system of switches is provided which periodically short the input to the amplifier and corrects the zero drift in this manner. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the correcting voltage is obtained by charging a capacitor 15 from the output of the amplifier during the " correcting zero interval, the input of the amplifier being shorted with switches 16, 17 in the Z position. When the switches are in the A position for normal amplification the input voltage at terminal 6, 7 is placed effectively in series opposition with the amplified zero error voltage of the amplifier and the effective zero error voltage is reduced by a factor equal approximately to the forward gain of the amplifier. Normal negative feed-back is applied to the input by resistor 9, the meter 8 indicating the output of the amplifier. The switch may be operated repeatedly, e.g. by an electric motor at intervals small enough to reduce the effect of zero drift during these intervals to negligible values. The amplifier may be used to operate a recorder of the " dotting " type, the operation of the zero drift correction switch then being synchronized with the printing cycle of the recorder. Two such amplifiers may be connected in parallel, the zero correcting switches being synchronized so that one amplifier is always in the normal amplifying position. In order that the external D.C. connection between one input and output terminal of the amplifier should not affect the performance of the amplifier, means may be provided to interrupt the D.C. connection between the initial and final stages. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 620,140, [Group XL (c)].
