[Class 17 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a shoe sole-laying press the fixed head of the machine is adapted to be supported by fluid in a cylinder under control of a valve which is closed for normal operation but in the event of the operator's hand obstructing a guard device this valve is opened to release the said fluid and allow movement of the normally fixed head. As shown the upper mould 3 is carried by a cylinder 4 slidably mounted on a fixed piston 5. Fluid is adapted to be trapped between the piston and the end of the cylinder when a valve 8 is actuated to close by a cam 21 on upward movement of the lower mould 1 on a normal working stroke of the moving head 2 of the press. This fluid provides a solid resistance to movement of the mould 3 against the working impact of the lower mould 1. If however the operator's hand is left between the moulds after starting the machine a guard hoop 29 connected by links 25, 23 to the follower 18 of cam 21 is prevented from moving downwards across the gap between the upper and lower moulds and so maintains the valve 8 open and also moves an abutment 27 on the cylinder 4 into a position to engage a projection 32 on the moving head 2. The moulds 1 and 3 are thus prevented from closing onto the operator's hand and the cylinder 4 is moved upwards by the moving head 2, the fluid escaping past the valve 8. The normal working position of the cylinder 4 is adjustable by a screw 41 acting on a lever 38 to which the cylinder 4 is connected by a rod 36. A spring-loaded safety valve 33 is also provided for the pressure chamber between the piston and cylinder.
